Occult Audio Vestral Voices for Windows Review

Occult Audio Vestral Voices is a cinematic vocal instrument created for composers and sound designers who need atmospheric, unsettling, and emotional vocal textures. The sounds were recorded inside St Michael’s Church, where the natural reflections and long reverberation became part of the source material. The library is built around two contrasting sides: Light, with intimate and breath-filled vocals, and Dark, where those performances are processed into more distant and fractured textures. The latest Vestral Voices 1.1 update significantly expands the original Kontakt library. It adds a standalone VST3/AU instrument, a granular engine, a Movement system for blending samples with granular textures, new convolution impulse responses, and a new preset collection. The original Kontakt version remains included for users who prefer the Kontakt workflow.

Vestral Voices is not designed as a traditional choir or vocal performance library. Its focus is atmosphere. The Light and Dark collections can provide everything from soft vocal beds and breathy sustained notes to distorted, degraded, and unsettling textures. This makes it particularly relevant to film, TV, game, horror, thriller, fantasy, and experimental scoring. The source material is divided into Sustains, Drones, and Textures. Sustains provide longer vocal performances, while Drones create slower evolving layers. Textures use reversed, manipulated, and reconstructed vocal material to create broader ambient sounds. Both Light and Dark variations are available, giving the same basic vocal source two very different characters.

The new granular engine is the biggest change in version 1.1. Instead of simply triggering a recorded vocal sample, you can manipulate the material in real time. Controls include grain size, density, detune, pitch, position, and spread. This makes it possible to turn a relatively simple vocal performance into a much more evolving sound-design texture. The Movement system adds another layer of control. It can continuously blend between the original vocal recording and its granular version. The movement can be controlled manually or through the instrument’s onboard motion control. This is useful when a cue needs to gradually move from a recognizable vocal sound into something more abstract.

Reverb is also important to the sound of Vestral Voices. The updated version adds new convolution impulse responses, giving the instrument additional spaces ranging from smaller environments to larger cinematic rooms. Drive and Tone controls can add warmth, grit, or further degradation, while filtering and dynamics provide additional shaping. For Windows users, the updated standalone version is particularly useful because VST3 does not require Kontakt. The original Kontakt library is still included, but the current version can run directly as a VST3 instrument in a compatible Windows DAW. The Kontakt version requires the full version of Kontakt, rather than Kontakt Player.

Alternatives

Soundiron Voices of Gaia is suited to composers looking for a larger collection of playable and cinematic female vocal performances.

EastWest Hollywood Choirs focuses on large-scale choir performances and provides a much broader traditional choral sound.

Conclusion

Occult Audio Vestral Voices 1.1 is focused on the space between beautiful vocal performance and unsettling sound design. Its Light and Dark collections provide contrasting source material, while the new granular engine and Movement system allow those recordings to be pushed much further. For Windows composers, the move to a standalone VST3 version is an important improvement because the updated instrument can run without Kontakt. The original Kontakt library is still included for users who prefer that format. With its church-recorded vocals, drones, textures, granular processing, and cinematic reverb, Vestral Voices is particularly suited to atmosphere, tension, horror, thriller, and experimental scoring rather than conventional vocal melodies.
