Pulsar Modular P422 Fairuz for Mac Review

Pulsar Modular P422 Fairuz is an EQ plugin for Mac users who want more than simple frequency boosting and cutting. It combines a four-band EQ with transformer color, op-amp-style saturation, contour curves, low-frequency shaping, shelves, filters, and a built-in wet/dry mix. The result is an EQ that can be used for normal tone shaping but can also add weight, punch, warmth, and character to a recording. The plugin is based around the idea of shaping the character of a sound instead of only correcting frequencies. Its four main EQ bands use Bell, Contour, and Contour X2 shapes. The Contour modes are particularly interesting because they combine a boost or cut with a complementary change around the selected frequency. This lets you create a stronger tonal change without simply pushing one area of the spectrum upward.

P422 Fairuz is also designed to add harmonic character. Every EQ band passes through an op-amp stage, while the Voice and Hammer controls add additional transformer-style coloration. You can therefore use it as an EQ, a tone-shaping tool, or a more colored processing effect. Pulsar Modular’s current version 2.1.0 was released on August 21, 2026, with improvements to EQ accuracy, the Tremor circuit, CPU performance, stability, presets, the visualizer, and window handling. For Mac users, the current version supports macOS 10.13 or later and works on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs through a Universal 2 binary. It is available in AU, VST3, and AAX formats and has zero added latency according to the developer.

Four-Band EQ

The main EQ section contains four bands: LOW, LO-MID, HI-MID, and HIGH. Each band offers three shapes. Bell provides the more familiar EQ response, while Contour and Contour X2 create a boost-and-cut relationship around the selected frequency. This is one of the main reasons Fairuz feels different from a conventional parametric EQ. You don’t have to create separate filters to achieve this type of tonal movement. One control can create the main boost while the complementary change happens automatically.

Tape Op’s Matt Anderson particularly highlighted these push-and-pull controls during his review. He found the approach useful for adding character, although he also noted that it takes some time to get used to because the result isn’t always as predictable as a standard EQ. That is an important practical point. Fairuz isn’t necessarily the first EQ you’d reach for when you need a very exact frequency correction. Its strength is making broad musical changes that also affect the character of the source.

Contour and Contour X2

Contour is one of Fairuz’s defining features. When you boost a frequency using a Contour band, another nearby area is automatically reduced. The opposite happens when cutting. This can create a more focused boost without making the whole surrounding area louder. Contour X2 takes the effect further. This can be useful when an ordinary boost sounds too thick or crowded. Instead of simply adding more energy to the selected area, Fairuz creates space around it. The current version also recalibrates the Contour and Contour X2 curves above 6 dB, according to Pulsar Modular’s version 2.0 release notes. The company says the update provides deeper boost and cut behavior without the previous high-gain limitation.

Proportional Q

Fairuz uses proportional Q. In simple terms, smaller EQ moves remain broad, while larger boosts and cuts become more focused. This follows the behavior associated with many classic analog EQ designs. For beginners, this means you don’t always have to think about Q separately. Make a small adjustment and the change stays relatively broad. Push the control harder and the affected area becomes more focused. It can make broad tone shaping feel more natural.

Op-Amp Character

Fairuz isn’t completely clean when you move the EQ controls. Pulsar Modular says each EQ band runs through an op-amp stage inspired by the character of discrete circuits used in classic console designs. The company specifically references the API 2520-style op-amp tradition as part of the inspiration, while also stating that Fairuz does not emulate a specific piece of hardware. This distinction matters. Fairuz is better described as an EQ with its own designed character rather than a digital copy of a particular vintage EQ. You can also turn the EQ portions off while keeping the circuit character active. That allows the plugin to function more like a saturation or tone-coloring processor. Tape Op also highlighted this use during its review.

P422 Fairuz Alternatives

FabFilter Pro-Q 4

FabFilter Pro-Q 4 is a better choice when precise frequency correction is the main priority. It provides a much more detailed visual EQ workflow and is easier to use when you need to target a specific problem frequency. Fairuz is more focused on tone and character, while Pro-Q is better suited to precise corrective work.

Pulsar Modular P455 MDN Sidecar

Pulsar Modular P455 MDN Sidecar is worth considering if you like Fairuz’s approach to musical EQ but want a different type of processing. It can be a useful companion rather than a direct replacement, especially for users who already prefer Pulsar Modular’s sound and workflow.

Softube Weiss EQ1

Softube Weiss EQ1 is a strong option for users looking for a more precise mastering-style EQ. It is better suited to clean and controlled processing, while Fairuz offers more obvious analog-style character.

UAD Pultec Passive EQ Collection

The UAD Pultec Passive EQ Collection is another option if you want broad, musical EQ moves with hardware-inspired tone. It uses a different EQ design from Fairuz, but both are useful when the goal is more than surgical frequency correction.

Kirchhoff-EQ

Kirchhoff-EQ is a flexible alternative for users who want extensive control over EQ curves and frequency processing. It is more technical and offers more detailed control, while Fairuz is quicker when you want to make broad tonal changes with character.

Conclusion

Pulsar Modular P422 Fairuz is a strong Mac EQ for producers, mixing engineers, and mastering users who want musical frequency shaping combined with analog-style color. It isn’t the best replacement for a surgical EQ, but that’s not really its purpose. Fairuz is at its best when a track already sounds good and you want to give it more weight, presence, depth, punch, or character without building a complicated processing chain.
